It’s that time of the year where self-reflection from the year just gone and the possibilities of another stretch of time causes everyone to set some audacious goals to aspire to. Be it new years resolutions, affirmations or call of destiny, I firmly believe having a direction for the year is a good thing in being able to see progress.
A lot has been said about goal setting in the self-help space. I’d go so far as to say that it’s the literal “bread and butter” of the field. The concept of SMART goals (and even SMARTER goals) has been around for years, but here’s my own take on it after the last 2 years of pretty tumultuous times.
The Basics
Here’s a quick recap of what SMART goals are. SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound
Specific
Good goals are well defined goals. It’s the difference between “I want to exercise more” vs “ I want to go for a run 5 times a week”. The former allows lots of wiggle room since what does “exercise more really ” really mean? Does doing 1 push up count? This concept ties closely with the next one…
