PSA: You don’t have to love your job!

It might actually be healthier if you don’t

“Find a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life!” or so the quote goes that has been attributed to everyone from Confucius to Winston Churchill (not kidding — just try and find a source by Googling yourself!). With that, a new age was born where people tried to find their passion not just for their life, their romantic partner but also for their work.

Back in pre-history

You don’t have to go back far in time to realise that this concept of finding a job you’re passionate about is a very modern concept. If we think back to pre-history, you could expect that the average hunter-gatherer didn’t exactly love stalking dangerous wild animals on an empty, growling stomach. If they were then successful in hunting their prey without injury, then came the arduous task of carrying said prey back to camp and finding ways of using every part of it. The skin had to be turned to clothes or tents. The bones into tools, weapons and ornaments. While you were working on these things, you also had to fend off scavengers that would be attracted to leftovers.

I daresay that the hunter-gatherers worked out of necessity rather than passion. I’m sure certain parts of it were wonderful: being out in the scenic landscape and being…
